Amid a sweeping cyberattack on telecommunications networks, U.S. officials are urging smartphone users to avoid traditional text messaging and switch to encrypted apps like Signal or WhatsApp to ensure secure communication.
Dubbed “Salt Typhoon,” the cyber campaign is believed to be orchestrated by Chinese hackers, according to the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The attack is targeting commercial telecom providers to steal sensitive data and conduct cyber espionage.
โThreat actors affiliated with the Peopleโs Republic of China (PRC) are exploiting telecom systems to compromise information,โ said Bryan Vorndran, assistant director of the FBIโs Cyber Division. โTogether with our interagency partners, the FBI has issued guidance to strengthen defenses against these intrusions.โ

Described as the โworst telecom hack in our nationโs historyโ by Senator Mark Warner, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, the attack has exposed vulnerabilities in critical communication infrastructure. โThe scale of this cyber campaign is unlike anything weโve seen before,โ Senator Warner told The Washington Post.
