iPhone 17 Hype Peaks Ahead of Apple’s “Awe-Dropping” Event — But Is It Worth the Upgrade?

The buzz around the iPhone 17 has officially hit overdrive.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has promised an “awe-dropping” reveal on September 9, sending the rumor mill into a frenzy. Every tech site and social feed is now flooded with “leaks” about the company’s next flagship, though Cupertino has—as always—kept completely silent.

Next Tuesday, Cook will finally take the stage at the Steve Jobs Theatre to unveil the real thing. Until then, we’re left sorting speculation from reality.

Slimmer, but not necessarily better

One of the biggest rumored changes is a record-thin iPhone. On paper, it sounds sleek. In practice, it raises red flags: thinner phones usually mean smaller batteries and more fragility. (Anyone remember bendgate?)

A 6.3-inch display, ProMotion, and always-on features with a variable refresh rate are expected—but none feel groundbreaking. Likewise, the new A19 chip promises more speed and efficiency, though most users likely won’t notice a difference in daily use compared to the already powerful A16 or A17.

The selfie camera upgrade

The one feature that stands out is the front camera. Apple is reportedly doubling the resolution to a 24MP TrueDepth sensor—the first major selfie upgrade in years. For anyone who lives on FaceTime or Instagram Stories, that’s tempting. But is it enough to justify shelling out more than Dh4,000? For me, not quite.

Why I’m skipping this round

My iPhone 14 Pro still feels like a beast. The Super Retina XDR OLED display is stunning, the A16 chip runs flawlessly, and aside from the selfie cam, I’m not really missing out on much.

So, no, I won’t be rushing to buy the iPhone 17. Maybe the iPhone 18 will deliver the “wow” factor I’m waiting for. Until then, my current phone—and my wallet—stay safe.
