DeepSeek’s flagship model, DeepSeek-R1, triggered the largest single-day stock market loss in history, wiping billions off the valuations of U.S. tech titans like Microsoft (a minority owner of OpenAI), Nvidia, and Broadcom. The selloff was fueled by fears that China had not only caught up to the U.S. in generative AI but had done so at a fraction of the cost.

However, DeepSeek had already stockpiled 10,000 of Nvidia’s H100 chips, allowing it to continue its work despite export controls. Alexandra Mousavizadeh, CEO of Evident, noted, “Biden’s policies may have forced China to innovate with fewer resources. But DeepSeek shows that containment strategies aren’t entirely effective.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged DeepSeek as “an impressive model, particularly around what they’re able to deliver for the price.” He added, “It’s legit invigorating to have a new competitor!”

Meanwhile, Stuart Russell, a professor at UC Berkeley, cautioned that it’s “probably too early to say” if the startup AI matches the latest U.S. systems.

However, he acknowledged that Chinese developers have consistently replicated U.S. advancements shortly after their release.
