The military has intensified its campaign to dismantle the group responsible for the kidnapping of American citizen Elliot Onil Eastman, who has remained missing since his abduction over a month ago.

Officials revealed that the perpetrators are a mix of local criminals and former followers of slain Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Furuji Indama, marking the emergence of a dangerous new kidnapping syndicate.

Breakthrough in the Case

A recent military operation in Barangay Canacan, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay, dealt a significant blow to the group. During an intense encounter last week, eight suspects were killed. Brig. Gen. Elmer Suderio, commander of the Armyโ€™s 102nd Brigade, confirmed that some of those killed had been directly involved in Eastmanโ€™s abduction in Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte, on October 17.

โ€œThis is a clear message: we will not allow criminal groups to thrive and harm our communities,โ€ Suderio said.

A Rising Threat

The discovery of this emerging kidnap-for-ransom ring has raised alarms in the region. The groupโ€™s compositionโ€”a hybrid of local crime elements and former Abu Sayyaf fightersโ€”underscores the evolving tactics of criminal organizations in Mindanao.

Suderio assured the public that operations are ongoing to locate Eastman and neutralize the remaining members of the syndicate. โ€œOur mission is clear: to bring Eastman home and dismantle this network of criminals entirely,โ€ he added.

Community Support Vital

Authorities are urging residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement. Information from the public has proven instrumental in past operations and could be critical in ensuring Eastmanโ€™s safe recovery.

As the military ramps up efforts, the fate of Elliot Onil Eastman hangs in the balance.ย  But one thing is certain: the government is determined to eliminate this threat and restore peace to the region.
