Zamboanga Sibugay cops nab suspect, seize high-powered firearm in Ipil checkpoint

IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — Police arrested a man and seized a high-powered firearm during a joint checkpoint operation in Barangay Tiayon, Ipil, early Thursday, November 6, authorities said.

The operation, led by the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office (ZSBPPO) under Provincial Director Colonel Barnard Danie Dasugo, was conducted in coordination with the Ipil Municipal Police Station (MPS), the Provincial Intelligence Unit, the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company, and the Provincial Highway Patrol Unit.

At around 1 a.m., law enforcers stopped a vehicle for routine inspection in Tiayon Compac, Ipil. During the inspection, police noticed a long firearm beside the driver. When asked to present documents for the weapon, the driver reportedly admitted he did not have a Permit to Transport (PTT).

Verification later showed that the firearm—a Kalashnikov semi-automatic rifle, Model SAIGA 9EXP, caliber 9mm (serial no. 21090311)—had an expired PTT as of May 22, 2024. Police also recovered a Glock pistol, Model G19 Blue, caliber 9mm (serial no. AAEN504), which was found to have a valid registration until October 25, 2035.

Authorities arrested the suspect for violating Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act. Both the suspect and the seized firearms were brought to the Ipil Municipal Police Station for proper documentation and disposition.

“I commend the Ipil MPS, ZSB PIU, ZSB 2nd PMFC, and ZSB PHPU for the successful conduct of this operation,” Colonel Dasugo said. “Their dedication, vigilance, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the community are truly commendable. We will continue to intensify our efforts to keep our communities safe.”
