Subanen weavers in Zamboanga Sibugay to benefit from new innovation hub
IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay – The Subanen community in this province is set to benefit from a new Hybrid Handloom Weaving and Natural Dyes Innovation Hub, a project that aims to breathe new life into traditional weaving while promoting sustainable textile production and eco-friendly dyeing methods.
The initiative, dubbed “Revitalization of Suba-Weave through Hybrid Handloom Weaving and Natural Dyes Innovation Hub for the Subanen People in Zamboanga Sibugay,” was made official through the signing of two key agreements among the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) IX, the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), and the Provincial Government of Zamboanga Sibugay.
The ceremonial signing, held at the provincial capitol in Ipil Heights, marked a milestone for both cultural preservation and local innovation.
The first pact, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between DOST-PTRI and the provincial government, establishes the weaving hub as a center for sustainable textile production and indigenous artistry. The second, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) among DOST IX, DOST-PTRI, and the provincial government, formalizes the project’s implementation with a total funding of P4.63 million under the DOST’s Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program.
Under the agreement, DOST will provide the handloom and natural dyeing equipment, while DOST-PTRI will handle the technical expertise and training. The provincial government will provide the land and building to house the facility.
Governor Dulce Ann K. Hofer welcomed the partnership, saying it reflects her administration’s commitment to preserve Subanen weaving traditions while integrating modern technology and sustainable practices.
“This innovation hub honors the artistry of our Subanen weavers and empowers them to thrive in today’s creative economy,” Hofer said.
Local officials, DOST and PTRI representatives, and Subanen Timuays and community leaders from Kabasalan, Siay, and Buug attended the event.
