IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay – The state weather bureau issued a heavy rainfall warning on Thursday for parts of the Zamboanga Peninsula as the southwest monsoon brought widespread showers and thunderstorms to western Mindanao.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Heavy Rainfall Warning No. 3 at around 2 p.m. local time. The warning included light to moderate rain with occasional heavy downpours over Zamboanga City and parts of Zamboanga del Norte.
Moderate to heavy rain affected Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and nearby areas. These conditions could last for two to three hours and may spread to neighboring locations.
PAGASA placed several areas under a yellow warning level, including parts of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. The affected areas are Maguindanao del Norte, Cotabato City, South Cotabato, Maguindanao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani. Weather officials warned that flooding is possible in low-lying areas and landslides could happen in mountainous places.
State weather forecasters expect temperatures in Zamboanga City to reach highs of about 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) and drop to around 75 degrees (24 degrees Celsius) at night, with high humidity. Light to moderate winds from the southwest will likely cause slight to moderate waves along the coast.
Monsoon conditions are likely to continue in the next few days, with a high chance of rain showers and thunderstorms through at least Friday. A separate tropical depression far to the northeast is not expected to affect the region directly.
PAGASA advised residents in vulnerable areas to keep track of official weather updates and get ready for possible flash floods.
