DOH: Road Crash Cases Dip 7 Percent During Holidays, Motorcycles Still Top Cases

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) recorded 263 road crash cases in 10 sentinel hospitals from December 21 to 5 a.m. of December 26, with motorcycle-related incidents accounting for the majority, the agency said Friday.

In its latest monitoring report, the DOH said the figure is 7% lower than cases recorded during the same period in 2024, but stressed that risky driving behavior remains prevalent.

A total of 193 cases involved motorcycles, while 224 individuals were not wearing safety gear such as helmets or seatbelts at the time of the crash. At least 31 cases were linked to alcohol use.

The DOH also reported two fatalities, both involving motorcycle riders.

With holiday travel expected to remain heavy, health officials urged motorists and riders to strictly follow road safety measures, including the use of DTI-approved helmets, seatbelts, and compliance with speed limits and traffic signs.

Drivers were also reminded to avoid driving while fatigued or intoxicated and to ensure adequate rest before traveling.

Why this matters

Road crashes remain a leading cause of injury and death in the Philippines, particularly among motorcycle riders, who are among the most vulnerable road users.

Even with a reported decline in cases, the DOH data shows that unsafe behavior—such as not wearing helmets or driving under the influence—continues to put lives at risk, especially during peak travel periods like the holidays.

Health officials warn that without stricter compliance with road safety rules, preventable injuries and deaths will continue to strain families, hospitals, and emergency services.
