Just days after US forces seized Venezuelan President Nicolรกs Maduro, President Donald Trump and his administration escalated rhetoric against multiple governments, signaling a more aggressive US posture across the Western Hemisphere โ and beyond.
Trump framed the moment as a reassertion of American dominance.
โWe are in the business of having countries around us that are viable and successful and where the oil is allowed to freely come out,โ Trump said Sunday. โAmerican dominance in the Western Hemisphere will never be questioned again.โ
Hereโs what Trump said โ and how affected countries responded.
Greenland: โWe need Greenlandโ
Trump renewed his call for the United States to take control of Greenland, citing national security and warning of Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic.
โWe need Greenlandโฆ Itโs so strategic right now,โ Trump said, claiming Denmark cannot adequately secure the territory.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen pushed back sharply, calling Trumpโs remarks โentirely unacceptable.โ
โOur country is not an object in great-power rhetoric. We are a people. A country. A democracy,โ Nielsen said, rejecting any comparison with Venezuela. Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly ruled out annexation.
Colombia: โSounds good to meโ
Trump attacked Colombian President Gustavo Petro, accusing him of fueling cocaine exports to the US. When asked if his remarks implied a possible US operation in Colombia, Trump replied: โSounds good to me.โ
Petro denied the accusations, pointing to large drug seizures and insisting he is neither a narco nor illegitimate. Still, UN data show cocaine production in Colombia has reached record highs.
Petro later said he would personally defend Colombia if necessary, marking a sharp escalation in rhetoric between Washington and Bogotรก.
Cuba: โReady to fallโ
Trump said military action against Cuba was unnecessary, arguing the island nation is economically collapsing after losing Venezuelan oil support.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the pressure, calling the Cuban government โa huge problem.โ
Cuban President Miguel Dรญaz-Canel responded defiantly, vowing to defend the Cuba-Venezuela alliance โat a heavy costโ during a rally in Havana.
Mexico: Cartels and intervention fears
Trump accused Mexico of failing to stop drug cartels, saying drugs were โpouringโ into the US. He said he had asked Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum whether she wanted US military help.
Sheinbaum rejected the idea outright, reiterating Mexicoโs long-standing opposition to foreign intervention.
โMexico categorically rejects intervention in the internal affairs of other countries,โ she said, while defending cooperation with the US against fentanyl trafficking.
Iran: โLocked and loadedโ
Trump also warned Iran amid ongoing anti-government protests, threatening US action if security forces kill demonstrators.
โIf they start killing peopleโฆ theyโre going to get hit very hard,โ Trump said, repeating earlier claims that the US was โlocked and loaded.โ
Iranโs Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the country would not yield and ordered that protesters be โput in their place.โ
The threats follow US airstrikes last year on Iranian nuclear facilities, which halted already fragile talks on Tehranโs nuclear program.
Why this matters
Trumpโs statements suggest a return to overt coercive diplomacy โ combining military threats, economic leverage, and territorial ambition.
The fallout could reshape alliances, fuel regional instability, and test international norms on sovereignty, especially as multiple flashpoints unfold simultaneously.
