San Miguel Global Power Invests โ‚ฑ3.2B to Boost Zamboanga Cityโ€™s Energy Supply with 56-MW Plant

A new spark of hope is on the horizon in a region long plagued by brownouts and flickering lights. Tycoon Ramon Angโ€™s San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp. (SMGP) is pouring in โ‚ฑ3.2 billion to double the capacity of its gas turbine power plant in Sangali, Zamboanga Cityโ€”a move expected to ease the crippling power woes of the Zamboanga Peninsula.

At the heart of the expansion is a 56-megawatt (MW) modular gas turbine, powered by diesel oil, designed to provide quick-response electricity during peak demand or sudden supply disruptions.

The plant will be connected directly to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) switching station just 200 meters away, ensuring that its output flows seamlessly into the regional grid.

For Zamboanga City, where residents and businesses endure unstable supply and low voltage due to reliance on long, radial transmission lines, the project could be a game-changer. With more than 14,200 square meters of land carved out for the facility, SMGP envisions not just a technical upgrade, but a stabilizing force for an economy hungry for reliable energy.

The benefits go beyond electricity. Jobs are expected to open up during the construction phase.

Local governments anticipate higher tax revenues, which could translate into better social services. And with steadier power, new businesses may finally be convinced to set up shop in the city, boosting opportunities for growth.

โ€œReliable power doesnโ€™t just light homesโ€”it powers livelihoods,โ€ the company said, noting that the facility is already on track for testing and commissioning this quarter.

This project is more than an investment figure or a megawatt count. It is the promise of brighter nights, stronger industries, and a future where the lights stay on.
