Pope Francis Condemns Trumpโ€™s Deportation Plan as โ€œA Disgraceโ€

Spread the News

Pope Francis has voiced strong opposition to President-elect Donald Trumpโ€™s proposed massive deportation program, set to begin on his first day in office. The pontiff, speaking in an interview with Italian television on Sunday, did not mince words about the moral implications of the plan.

โ€œIf it is true, it will be a disgrace,โ€ the pope said, according to a CNN translation. โ€œIt makes the poor wretches who have nothing pay the bill for the imbalance. It wonโ€™t do. This is not the way to solve things.โ€

Trump has consistently championed a hardline stance on immigration, promising to launch the largest deportation effort in American history upon taking office on Monday. At a rally on the eve of his inauguration, Trump reaffirmed his intentions with characteristic bravado.

โ€œBy the time the sun sets tomorrow, the invasion of our country will have come to a halt,โ€ he declared to supporters in Washington.

Reports indicate that Trump will sign an executive order on Monday, declaring a crisis at the southern border. The Wall Street Journal has also highlighted plans for raids targeting undocumented immigrants, beginning in Chicago as early as Tuesday.

Outcry from Faith Leaders

Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, joined Pope Francis in condemning Trumpโ€™s proposed actions. In a statement, he described the rumored deportation efforts as โ€œprofoundly disturbing.โ€

โ€œIndiscriminate mass deportation would be an affront to the dignity of all people and communities,โ€ Cupich said. โ€œIt denies the legacy of what it means to be an American.โ€

A History of Criticism

This is not the first time Pope Francis has taken issue with Trumpโ€™s immigration policies. During Trumpโ€™s first term, the pope repeatedly criticized measures that he believed undermined the dignity of migrants and refugees.

In 2016, when Trump vowed to build a border wall, Francis famously remarked, โ€œA person who only thinks about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian.โ€ Two years later, the pope denounced the administrationโ€™s family separation policy as โ€œimmoralโ€ and โ€œcontrary to our Catholic values.โ€

When Trump threatened to close the U.S.-Mexico border in 2019, Pope Francis reiterated his stance to the contrary. โ€œBuilders of walls, be they made of razor wire or bricks, will end up becoming prisoners of the walls they build,โ€ the pontiff said.

He acknowledged the complexities of immigration but urged leaders to seek humane solutions, not rely on razor wire and division.

A Call for Compassion

Pope Francisโ€™s message serves as a global reminder of the moral weight of such decisions. For the pope, the issue transcends politics; it is a matter of human dignity, justice, and compassion.

As Trump proceed with his plans, the backlash from religious leaders signals that the battle over Americaโ€™s immigration policies will remain a deeply contentious and morally charged issue.
