PAGASA monitors potential super typhoon outside PAR

ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY, Philippines – State weather forecasters are closely monitoring a developing tropical system outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), which may enter the country’s jurisdiction by the weekend and could intensify into a typhoon — or possibly a super typhoon.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Thursday, November 6, that the weather disturbance remains too far to directly affect the country but is showing signs of rapid intensification as it moves west-northwestward.

Once it enters PAR, the system will be given the local name Uwan.

“We are closely tracking the system’s movement. Based on current data, it could enter PAR between Friday and Saturday. However, its exact track and potential landfall are still uncertain,” PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said in a briefing.

The weather bureau warned that even if the cyclone does not make landfall, it may still enhance the northeast monsoon or amihan, bringing cooler temperatures, strong winds, and rough seas over parts of Luzon and Visayas.

At present, the country is experiencing generally cloudy conditions, with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms expected in parts of Mindanao, including the Zamboanga Peninsula.

PAGASA also advised residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant as localized thunderstorms may cause flash floods, especially during the late afternoon or evening.

Local disaster offices have been told to prepare contingency plans ahead of the possible entry of the storm.

The disturbance comes less than a month after Typhoon Kabayan battered Northern Luzon, highlighting the ongoing risks during the tail end of the typhoon season.

PAGASA issues tropical cyclone bulletins every six hours once a storm enters PAR.
