KORONADAL CITY, Philippines — For children walking into classrooms in the rural town of Tampakan, a pair of slippers and a few school supplies can make a difference — easing the burden on parents already struggling to meet their children’s everyday needs.
That is the aim of a recent assistance program by Sagittarius Mines Inc. (SMI), which distributed school supplies and slippers to pupils of Escobillo Elementary School in Barangay Pulabato, Tampakan, South Cotabato.
The initiative, reported by community leaders and municipal executives on Saturday, October 10, is part of the company’s continuing support for education through its Social Development and Management Program (SDMP).
The assistance seeks to address some of the children’s basic school needs, helping them concentrate on their lessons while reducing the expenses their families must shoulder.
For parents struggling to provide even essential items, the support could mean one less expense to worry about as their children pursue their education.
‘A big help’ for struggling families
Sheila Mae G. Ordona, head teacher III of Escobillo Elementary School, welcomed the assistance, saying it would benefit both pupils and the wider school community.
“We are very grateful to Sagittarius Mines, Inc. for extending this assistance to our learners. We truly appreciate SMI’s support to our school and our learners,” Ordona said.
She added that the donated supplies and slippers would help ease the financial pressure on parents who find it difficult to provide everything their children need for school.
“This is a big help to our learners, especially to parents who may be struggling to provide some of their children’s school needs,” she said.
While school supplies are essential to classroom learning, basic items such as slippers can also help children meet everyday needs as they travel to and attend school.
The distribution highlights how assistance addressing practical, day-to-day expenses can complement the work of teachers and families in keeping children focused on their education.
Mining firm’s community development program
SMI said its education assistance forms part of its SDMP, which supports initiatives in education, health, livelihood and other community-identified priorities in coordination with local partners.
The program is intended to help address local needs while supporting longer-term community development.
The company also cited cooperation with host communities as part of its approach to responsible mining, working with local partners on programs intended to improve residents’ access to services and opportunities.
For Tampakan’s schoolchildren, the immediate benefit is more tangible: supplies for their studies and slippers for their daily needs.
The distribution is one example of how community assistance programs can help families meet some of the costs associated with sending children to school.
But sustained educational progress also depends on broader needs, including adequate school facilities, learning materials, teacher support and reliable access to education.
