IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — A long-delayed airport project in Zamboanga Sibugay is finally edging closer to takeoff, with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines committing ₱540 million for major infrastructure works.
The investment will fund an extension of the Ipil Airport runway and the construction of essential airport facilities, with implementation targeted for 2027 and 2028, according to the Philippine Information Agency.
The money will come from CAAP’s corporate funds, which was discussed during the second monthly coordination meeting between CAAP and the provincial government. Officials reviewed the timetable and remaining requirements for the airport’s development.
CAAP technical personnel, including representatives from its Aerodrome Development and Management Service, joined provincial officials in the discussions.
A gateway years in the making
Ipil Airport is more than just another government construction project. Once operational, the airport could give residents a faster alternative to lengthy road and sea journeys while providing businesses, tourists, and investors with easier access to the province.
Improved air links could also help local producers reach markets beyond Zamboanga Sibugay and make it easier for goods and people to move in and out of the province.
Provincial officials have identified improved air connectivity as a potential driver of tourism, investment, job creation, and economic activity. But getting the airport to that point has been a slow process.
The project has faced delays, including obstructions in and around the airport site and the need for additional infrastructure and funding.
The latest CAAP commitment is intended to address a significant part of those infrastructure requirements.
Turning an airport project into a working gateway
The provincial government and CAAP are now coordinating on the remaining requirements as they push the project toward its next phase.
Ipil Airport is part of CAAP’s Area Center IX network, which includes airports in Zamboanga City, Pagadian, Dipolog, Jolo, Sanga-Sanga, Liloy and Siocon.
CAAP has also included the construction of a perimeter fence at Ipil Airport among its infrastructure procurements, part of the supporting works needed to develop the facility.
The ₱540-million investment marks a significant step for a province that has long depended on road and sea links.
But the real test will come in the years ahead: whether the planned runway extension and facilities are delivered on schedule and ultimately translate into an airport capable of serving passengers.
