Motorists may be facing another round of uneven pump price adjustments next week, as diesel prices are projected to rise while gasoline prices could remain flat or slightly move either way.
According to Jetti Petroleum president Leo Bellas, initial estimates indicate a possible diesel price hike of 20 to 40 centavos per liter. Gasoline prices, meanwhile, may either increase or decrease by around 10 centavos per liter.
Whatโs driving the price changes?
Bellas said average regional fuel prices have slightly eased after refinery output recovered from recent maintenance shutdowns. This improved supply has helped temper price pressures, particularly for gasoline.
However, the relief has been limited.
Higher freight and premium costs, coupled with persistent geopolitical risks that could disrupt global oil supply, continue to weigh on pricesโespecially diesel, which is more exposed to shipping and logistics costs.
Why diesel matters more
Diesel price movements carry wider economic implications than gasoline.
In the Philippines, diesel fuels public transport, delivery trucks, farm equipment, and power generation. Any increase, even by a few centavos, can quickly ripple through the economyโpushing up transport fares, food prices, and the cost of basic goods.
This is why diesel hikes commuters, farmers, and small businesses felt more sharply particularly in provincial areas.
Why mixed signals worry consumers
The contrasting outlook for diesel and gasoline highlights the fragile balance in the global oil market. While refinery recovery offers some relief, external factorsโsuch as conflicts in oil-producing regions or disruptions in shipping routesโcan quickly reverse gains.
For consumers, this means fuel prices remain highly sensitive to global events, making household budgeting more difficult amid already elevated inflation and transport costs.
The bottom line
Even modest fuel price adjustments matter in a country where transport costs feed directly into the price of food and basic services.
As diesel prices inch upward and gasoline prices remain uncertain, the coming weeks will test whether easing supply conditions can outweigh geopolitical risksโor if consumers should brace for more pressure at the pump.
