Netflixβs foray into live sports broadcasting with last Fridayβs Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match is being hailed as a milestone by the platformβbut not without controversy. With a staggering 108 million viewers globally and a peak of 65 million concurrent streams, the event set impressive records. Yet, not everyone is celebrating.
One disgruntled subscriber, Ronald βBlueβ Denton from Hillsborough County, Florida, is suing Netflix, claiming the event was marred by constant streaming disruptions. In a lawsuit filed Monday, Denton accused the streaming giant of breach of contract and deceptive trade practices, seeking unspecified damages.
Denton hopes to escalate the suit into a class-action case, representing other subscribers who experienced similar interruptions during the highly anticipated bout. According to Denton, Netflixβs inability to handle the surge in traffic led to frustrating buffering and glitching, particularly during the co-main event featuring Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor and the Paul-Tyson main event.
βInstead of delivering the service customers pay for, Netflix was woefully unprepared to meet the demand,β the lawsuit states. It also alleges Netflix failed to provide restitution while continuing to charge subscribers, a move Denton describes as a clear failure to fulfill contractual obligations.
Reports indicate that between 85,000 and 97,000 users complained of disruptions during the event, leaving many viewers fuming.
The backlash has amplified concerns about Netflixβs readiness for future live events, including the NFLβs Christmas Day doubleheader. The platform is set to stream games featuring the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans. Fans are now questioning whether Netflix can avoid another debacle.
While Netflix has not yet commented on the lawsuit, the NFL reportedly remains confident the platform will iron out the kinks by December 25.
For now, however, Netflix is grappling with a rocky start in its bid to dominate the live sports streaming space. Will it recover in time for the holiday seasonβs marquee events, or will this legal battle further tarnish its reputation? Fansβand perhaps attorneysβwill be watching closely.
