China has stepped into the fray, urging calm and restraint in the face of growing nuclear threats as tensions escalate between Russia and the West.
The appeal follows Russian President Vladimir Putinโs alarming move to expand Moscow’s potential use of nuclear weapons amid deepening conflict in Ukraine.
The spark?
U.S. President Joe Bidenโs controversial decision to supply Kyiv with long-range missiles, which Ukraine used to target the Russian region of Bryansk on Tuesday. The strikes provoked a fiery response from Moscow, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declaring the conflict had entered โa qualitatively new phaseโ of what he called โthe Western war against Russia.โ

In a dramatic escalation, Putin signed a decree allowing the use of nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states that receive support from nuclear powersโa move that experts warn could dangerously widen the scope of the war.
China, one of Russiaโs key strategic partners, broke its usual measured silence on Wednesday to call for immediate de-escalation.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized the need for dialogue over destruction.

“Under the current situation, all relevant parties need to remain calm and restrained, and jointly seek de-escalation and lower strategic risks through dialogue and consultation,” Lin said.
Reaffirming Beijing’s neutral stance, Lin added, “China calls for all parties to deescalate the situation and strive for the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis. This position remains unchanged. China will continue to play a constructive role to this end.”
Beijingโs remarks underscore its balancing actโcondemning nuclear brinkmanship while avoiding outright criticism of Moscow.
China’s call for restraint offers a glimmer of hope for diplomacy in a conflict inching closer to unprecedented catastrophe.
