2 Mindanao provinces among Philippinesโ€™ most flood-prone areas

Maguindanao and North Cotabato have been named among the 10 most flood-prone provinces in the country, according to data presented by Malacaรฑang on Monday, August 11.

The disclosure came as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. rolled out sumbongsapangulo.ph, a public website mapping ongoing flood control projects and enabling citizens to report irregularities. The move is part of the Presidentโ€™s directive, issued in his 4th State of the Nation Address in July, to audit the Department of Public Works and Highwaysโ€™ (DPWH) multi-billion-peso flood mitigation program.

Despite the massive allocations for flood control, Malacaรฑang said thereโ€™s a mismatch between where the bulk of these projects are located and the provinces facing the highest flood risks.

The list of most flood-prone areas includes: Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Maguindanao, North Cotabato, Oriental Mindoro, and Ilocos Norte.

However, provinces with the largest number of flood control projects are Bulacan, Cebu, Isabela, Pangasinan, Pampanga, Albay, Leyte, Tarlac, Camarines Sur, and Ilocos Norte โ€” a discrepancy the President wants addressed.

The Palace said the online platform will allow the public to monitor progress on flood control infrastructure and submit complaints, boosting transparency and accountability in government spending.
