IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — Zamboanga Sibugay has opened its first-ever museum and science center, the first for science education and cultural preservation in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

The newly-launched facility at the Capitol Building in Ipil is a collaborative initiative between the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office IX and the Provincial Government of Zamboanga Sibugay.

The DOST-9 Local Grants-in-Aid Program funded the project through a ₱3-million grant, while the provincial government provided renovation and infrastructure support to house both the museum and the science facility.

Jennifer Pidor, provincial director of DOST Zamboanga Sibugay, said the new museum and science center is a major step toward strengthening public appreciation for both culture and science in the province.

The initiative reflects a growing push to make science, technology, and local history more accessible to communities across the region.

The newly opened museum highlights the province’s history, natural attractions, and cultural heritage. It features exhibits on the traditions and identity of the indigenous Subanen people, alongside displays that trace the province’s development and preserve stories and artifacts reflecting its unique cultural fabric.

Complementing the museum is the Science Centrum, which offers interactive exhibits and hands-on activities designed for students, teachers, and visitors of all ages. The learning stations encourage exploration through immersive and experiential science demonstrations.

Pidor said the facility aims to become a hub for both heritage education and scientific learning.
