ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Viral moments often disappear as quickly as they appear in the fast-moving world of social media. But for 30-year-old Alkindar “Khinz” Amil, a widely shared video has turned into something more meaningful: a reminder that knowledge and hard work can shine anywhere.

Amil, a native of Sulu now working in Zamboanga City, recently caught the attention of thousands of netizens after a video of him explaining the dynamics of the global petroleum market circulated online.

Amil explains

In the viral clip, Amil breaks down the complexities of supply and demand, helping viewers understand why fuel prices fluctuate. His clear, confident explanation led many online users to assume he was a trained industry analyst.

Instead, Amil works as a supervisor at a local gas station.

His story quickly resonated with viewers across Mindanao, especially after many learned about his academic background.

Amil studied at Mindanao State University–Sulu (Jolo Campus) through a scholarship program supported by Sulu Governor Toto Tan and Vice Governor Abdusakur Tan. A consistent academic achiever, he graduated Cum Laude in 2016 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Fisheries.

“I am deeply grateful to the Tan family and their scholarship program,” Amil said, crediting the support he received from his home province.

But Amil emphasizes that his journey in the petroleum industry began at the bottom.

He started as a pump attendant, a job he says deserves respect and recognition.

“No one should look down on pump attendants,” Amil said. “I started there, too.”

Humble beginnings

Speaking to News5 stringer Christian Dumaboc, Amil shared that he constantly studies industry trends to improve his knowledge. He attends meetings, asks questions from industry colleagues, and closely monitors global oil market movements.

“I ask questions, and they teach me where to monitor prices in the world market,” he said.

For many in the Zamboanga Peninsula and the Sulu Archipelago, Amil’s story reflects what some online users describe as the “Mindanaoan Dream” — the belief that with education, support, and determination, success can grow from humble beginnings.

From the classrooms of Jolo to a viral moment online, Amil is now being celebrated not just for his intelligence but also for reminding people that dignity and expertise can come from any workplace. (with Christian Dumaboc)
