MANILA, Philippines โ The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) has unveiled a new lineup of 28 free online courses that learners across the Philippines โ and the world โ can take from January to June 2026.
The courses, part of UPOUโs Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) initiative, are free, self-paced, and open to everyone regardless of age, academic background, or location. They are hosted on UPOUโs Massive Open Distance e-Learning (MODeL) platform, underscoring the universityโs mission to expand access to quality education through digital technologies.
UPOU new offerings and expanded topics
Among the list of offerings are four newly introduced courses, designed to respond to emerging learning needs and professional interests. These include:
-
Practical Home Behavior Management for Children with Special Needs
-
Data Annotation for Aspiring BPO Professionals
-
Climate Information Services
-
Internalizing Behaviors among Children and Practical Home Support
The full roster of 28 courses covers a broad range of subjects that reflect both global trends and local priorities โ from climate and resilience to social services and digital skills. Participants can enroll in courses that fit their goals and schedules, as many are geared toward workforce readiness and lifelong learning.
How to enroll
To join a course, interested learners must first create a MODeL account via the UPOU MODeL portal. After registering with an email address, users will receive login credentials and can browse available courses on the platformโs homepage. Enrollment typically opens two weeks before the start of each course and remains open while the course is ongoing.
According to UPOUโs helpdesk, MOOCs are open to anyone with internet access and a desire to learn. There are no tuition fees, academic prerequisites, or nationality restrictions. These courses are designed to be massive, open, and flexible for a global audience.
Certificates and lifelong learning
Learners who complete the course requirements โ such as quizzes and module activities โ will earn a 16-hour e-certificate. It can be added to resumes or professional profiles as evidence of continuing education and skills development.
UPOU has regularly expanded its MOOCs offerings in recent years as part of its wider strategy to democratize education and support lifelong learning for Filipinos and international learners alike. Details of courses for the second half of 2026 (JulyโDecember) are expected to be announced later.
