A 62-year-old municipal employee was shot and killed while traveling home Monday evening in Zamboanga Sibugay, adding to concerns over persistent gun violence in parts of the southern Philippines.
The victim, an auxiliary worker employed by the municipal government of Imelda, was found dead beside his motorcycle along a roadside in Barangay Santa Barbara after what witnesses initially believed was a traffic accident.
According to police investigators, the man had just left the municipality of Imelda and was traveling toward the neighboring town of Buug on the evening of June 22 when residents heard a loud crashing sound. When they went to investigate, they discovered the victim lying motionless beside his fallen motorcycle, approximately 100 meters from where the noise was first heard.
Authorities later determined that the man had been fatally shot.
Police have not publicly identified any suspects or disclosed how many times the victim was shot. Investigators are examining possible leads to determine both the identity of the gunman and the motive behind the killing.
The victim had served as an auxiliary worker for the local government of Imelda.
No arrests have been announced, and authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
