The Office of the Vice Mayor of Kiblawan in Davao del Sur and a private company will jointly implement a streetlight project as a community service initiative aimed at benefiting residents of the municipality.

According to reports aired on Saturday, February 21, by radio stations in the Bangsamoro region, Region 12 (Central Mindanao), and Digos City, the capital of Davao del Sur, officials of Sagittarius Mines Incorporated (SMI) formally turned over a P1.5 million check to Kiblawan Vice Mayor Joel Calma on January 26 as the companyโ€™s support for the streetlight project.

Streetlight, and other projects

The national government has authorized SMI to implement the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project in Tampakan, South Cotabato. Blaan leaders in the area have granted consent to the mining venture.

Vice Mayor Calma said SMI has yet to begin copper and gold mining operations in Tampakan.

But the company, he said, has already spent more than P2 billion in recent years for social development projects. These projects include education, health, and social welfare in Tampakan, Kiblawan, Malungon in Sarangani, and Columbio in Sultan Kudarat.

SMI maintains strong and extensive cooperation with the local government units of the four municipalities in implementing these projects, he added.

‘Big help’

Calma said the SMI-funded streetlight project will bring significant relief and convenience to Kiblawan residents.

โ€œThe humanitarian projects of SMI are a big help to the people of Kiblawan. We are grateful to SMI for what it has done for our town,โ€ Vice Mayor Calma said.
