SIDEBAR: Why Gutalac exports nickel — not iron ore

Gutalac, a coastal municipality in Zamboanga del Norte, is known in mining and shipping circles as a nickel export point, not an iron ore hub.

According to government mineral records, Gutalac has no active iron ore mines. Instead, the area hosts lateritic nickel deposits, which are rich in nickel and iron-bearing minerals but are commercially classified and shipped as nickel ore, not iron ore.

Lateritic nickel ore is commonly exported in raw or minimally processed form to China, where it is used in the production of stainless steel and battery components. Northern Mindanao ports, including those in Zamboanga del Norte, are strategically positioned for this trade.

While nickel laterite contains a high percentage of iron, it cannot be marketed as iron ore because its composition and processing requirements differ significantly from iron ore used in steelmaking.

Mining experts say the confusion often arises because nickel laterite appears “iron-rich,” leading some reports to mistakenly label it as iron ore — a misclassification that can distort public understanding of both local mining activity and cargo risks at sea.
