Bohol, the Philippines’ first UNESCO Global Geopark, is leading the way in harnessing clean energy to support its flourishing tourism industry. It turned to harnessing solar energy to meet the growing demand for infrastructure and energy.
In 2023, Bohol experienced a staggering 313% surge in visitors, reinforcing its reputation as a top travel destination.
The island has turned to renewable solutions like the Dagohoy Solar Power Project (DSPP). This large-scale solar farm is a collaboration between Dagohoy Green Energy Corporation (DGEC), the Department of Energy (DOE), and Bohol’s local government units.
Equipped with 40,000 Trinasolar Vertex modules, the DSPP generates 41,000 MWh of electricity annually with a capacity of 27 MWp. This clean energy powers approximately 18,000 homes and major attractions such as the iconic Chocolate Hills and the Tarsier Sanctuary.
These efforts not only support tourism but also preserve the island’s natural wonders for future generations.

The rising trend of eco-conscious travel, highlighted by the 2023 Sustainable Travel Report, shows that 76% of global travelers prioritize eco-friendly options. This shift has inspired Philippine destinations to embrace greener initiatives, led by the Department of Tourism’s ANAHAW Philippine Sustainable Tourism Certification.
The program recognizes accommodations that adopt energy-efficient and carbon-reducing practices—a critical step toward sustainable development.

By reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 28,642 metric tons annually, the project significantly lowers the island’s environmental footprint. It has also created over 600 local jobs during its construction phase, stimulating economic growth and supporting local businesses.
