NATO Official Warns: “War is Back in Europe,” Urging Businesses and Governments to Prepare
In a stark wake-up call to the West, Admiral Rob Bauer, Chair of NATO’s Military Committee, has delivered a chilling message: “War is back on the European continent.”
Speaking at the Berlin Security Conference, the Admiral urged a profound shift in both public and private sectors to prepare for the unpredictable realities of modern warfare.
Bauer, who has previously warned of the possibility of widespread mobilization, emphasized that businesses must brace for a “war-time” mindset.
“Business leaders in Europe and America need to realize that the commercial decisions they make have strategic consequences for their nation’s security,” he said. “We need production and distribution lines that can adapt swiftly to conflict demands.”
A Sobering Reality for Civilians
The 61-year-old Admiral also highlighted the vital role civilians would play in a potential World War III scenario, calling on governments to establish systems capable of managing mass mobilizations.
“We must transition from an era of predictability and efficiency to one where anything can happen at any time,” he stated. “An industrial base that can rapidly produce weapons and ammunition is crucial for sustained conflict.”
Preparing for the Unthinkable
Eastern European nations, particularly those sharing borders with Russia, have long been acutely aware of these threats. Finland, for instance, boasts a staggering 50,500 bomb shelters, a stark contrast to the limited infrastructure in countries like the UK. This disparity underscores the uneven levels of readiness across NATO allies.
The growing unease is compounded by recent shifts in Russia’s nuclear doctrine. Once limited to retaliatory use, Moscow now claims the right to deploy nuclear weapons preemptively if conventional strikes threaten its interests.
President Vladimir Putin has even warned of using nuclear arms against nations supporting Ukraine’s military efforts—a veiled threat aimed squarely at the US and UK.
Rising Tensions, Global Implications
With Western nations supplying Ukraine with longer-range missiles capable of striking deep into Russian territory, the risk of escalation looms large. While analysts are divided on whether Putin would act on these threats, the Admiral’s warning highlights the need for urgent preparation.
As the specter of war once again looms over Europe, Bauer’s words serve as a call to action: “War is not a thing of the past. It can—and does—happen again. We must be ready.”
