The International Criminal Court (ICC) Appeals Chamber has rejected the appeal of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte seeking his interim release from detention. It upheld the January 26 ruling of the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber.
The ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I ordered Duterte to remain at the ICC Detention Center in the Netherlands due to flight risk concerns. โThe Appeals judges unanimously confirm the decision of Pre-Trial Chamber I, which had remanded Mr. Duterte in detention,โ said ICC spokesperson Oriane Maillet.
The defense argued that Pre-Trial Chamber I erred in disregarding a report on Duterteโs health condition. The Appeals Chamber said the report offered no new medical information, noting the defenseโs doctors did not conduct fresh examinations.
The court stressed that assessing risk factors is a legal decision for the Pre-Trial Chamber and does not require medical input.
