MANILA, Philippines โ The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday urged public schools to fully utilize digital tools as it advances learner-centered reforms aimed at making classrooms more engaging and inclusive.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara made the call during the celebration of the International Day of Education at Gen. Pio del Pilar National High School in Makati City.
Angara, in a statement, said digital platforms can help students thrive by creating more interactive and engaging learning environments.
โBy all means, letโs make use of the tools being made available by the Department to maximize our studentsโ learning. We want learning to be more fun and more engaging,โ Angara said. Education reforms are a shared effort among educators, learners, and stakeholders, the top educator added.
DepEd has partnered with Khan Academy Philippines, Canva, Google, and Microsoft to provide instructional and interactive digital resources that are freely accessible to public school teachers and learners.
Angara said these partnerships are part of DepEdโs ongoing efforts to improve teaching delivery and adapt to the changing needs of students.
He also emphasized that the agencyโs reform agenda is strongly learner-centric, extending even to foundational levels of education.
As an example, Angara pointed to the โhistoricโ expansion of the School-Based Feeding Program, which will now cover all kindergarten and Grade 1 learners in public schools for 180 days each school year. The budget of DepEd has increased 10 times higher compared to last year.
โFor the first time in Philippine history, we will have universal feeding for all public schools in kindergarten and Grade 1.โ Angara said. (Photo: Wikimedia Creative Commons)
