TUNGAWAN, Zamboanga Sibugay — Mayor Angelito Aniñon is earning cheers from Tungaweños for his steadfast support of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) campus in the municipality, the town’s only higher education institution.

For the faculty and staff of WMSU-ESU Tungawan, Aniñon’s victory in the last mayoral elections was a relief. They had closely watched the polls, fearing that a different outcome could have led to the closure of the campus.

“His loss would have meant the end of the college here,” said one faculty member, speaking to Daily Sun Chronicle on condition of anonymity.

Aniñon, a political new-kid-in-town, won over Lalay Climaco Evangelista, the daughter of former Mayor Carlnan Climaco, ending the almost 30 years reign of the Climaco dynasty in Tungawan.

Residents also expressed gratitude on social media. “Bayani ka, mayor!” wrote one, while another commented, “Tinuod nga serbisyo. Salamat sa pagtabang sa eskwelahan!” (True service. Thank you for helping the school!)

The previous administration, led by Mayor Carlnan Climaco, had stopped support to WMSU-ESU when the main campus assumed control of all ESUs across the Zamboanga Peninsula. WMSU now manages 11 ESUs in Zamboanga Sibugay and Pagadian City.

Nosca Taasim, the campus administrator, praised Aniñon for going beyond mere words of support. On Facebook, she wrote that the mayor had even sent the campus athletic team to the WMSU main campus sportsfest.

“Ma shaa Allah walhamdulillah. Mayor Angelito Aniñon, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you. The impact of your unconditional help and support to WMSU-Tungawan is immeasurable. While we say ‘thank you,’ please know that our gratitude runs far deeper than words can express. Rest assured that we will continue to do our best to support your vision in realizing Bagong Tungawan,” Taasim wrote.

For many in Tungawan, the mayor’s hands-on approach is a welcome change. Local resident Jessa Calizo said, “Dako kaayo ang among pasalamat. Bayani jud siya sa edukasyon sa among lungsod.” (We are very grateful. He is truly a hero for education in our town.)

As the town continues to grow, citizens say the mayor’s support for education signals a brighter future for the youth. “Tinuod nga serbisyo, dili lang pang-pista, pero para sa katawhan,” added another resident. (True service, not just for show, but for the people.)
