Donald Trump hasnโt even begun his second term as President, yet his audacious rhetoric is already making global waves. His latest comments have drawn sharp criticism after suggesting that the United States should assert control over two highly significant but off-limits regions: the Panama Canal and Greenland.
These remarks mark a provocative turn in Trumpโs foreign policy, signaling that his โAmerica Firstโ vision may extend far beyond U.S. bordersโpotentially reshaping the global balance of power.
Panama Canal: A New Flashpoint
The controversy began during a conservative conference in Arizona, where Trump lambasted Panamaโs โridiculousโ toll fees on U.S. ships using the Panama Canal. The U.S. played a pivotal role in constructing the canal in the early 1900s. But it transferred to Panama the full control in the 1970s.
โWhy are we paying such high fees for something we built?โ Trump asked the crowd, hinting that the U.S. should reclaim control if the fees arenโt reduced. He also raised alarms about Chinaโs growing economic footprint in the region, pointing out that Chinaโthe canalโs second-largest user after the U.S.โposes a potential threat to American interests.
โItโs a matter of national security,โ Trump declared, expressing fears that the canal could end up in the โwrong handsโ if the U.S. doesnโt act decisively.
Panamaโs President Josรฉ Raรบl Mulino wasted no time in responding. โEvery square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zones is part of Panama, and it will continue to be,โ he stated in a defiant video posted on X (formerly Twitter). Mulino firmly rejected Trumpโs assertions, insisting that the canalโs fees are fair and its sovereignty non-negotiable.
Despite this strong rebuttal, experts agree on the canalโs strategic importance for U.S. trade and military operationsโespecially amid escalating tensions with China.
Greenland: An Arctic Power Play
Not stopping at Panama, Trump shifted his attention to Greenland over the weekend. In a social media post, he declared that securing control of the Arctic island was critical for U.S. national security and โglobal freedom.โ
Greenlandโs strategic value is undeniable. It hosts a key U.S. airbase, boasts vast untapped natural resources, and occupies a prime position in emerging Arctic trade routes. This has attracted the interest of global powers like Russia and Chinaโmaking it a geopolitical hotspot.
Trumpโs fascination with Greenland isnโt new. He floated the idea of purchasing the island in 2019. However, both Denmark and Greenlandโs leadership swiftly rejected the notion. This time, Greenlandโs Prime Minister Mรบte Egede issued a firm response: โWe are not for sale and will never be for sale.โ
Rhetoric or Reality?
While Trumpโs threats regarding the Panama Canal and Greenland might appear largely rhetorical, they underscore his readiness to push U.S. interests aggressively on the global stage. His approach echoes his first-term strategy, which often relied on bold, polarizing statements to set the tone for negotiationsโwhether through tariffs, military posturing, or public ultimatums.
As Trump prepares to take office again on January 20, itโs evident that his โAmerica Firstโ agenda isnโt just about protecting U.S. borders. Itโs a vision that seeks to reassert American dominance worldwide, even if it means challenging established norms and igniting international disputes.
Whether these moves are part of a calculated strategy or political grandstanding, one thing is clear: Trumpโs return to the White House will bring with it a foreign policy that promises to be as unpredictable as it is assertive.
