MANILA, Philippines โ ChatGPT is quickly shedding its image as a niche tech tool, with a new study showing it has become part of peopleโs everyday routines across the globe.
A joint analysis by OpenAI and Harvard economist David Deming looked at 1.5 million conversations and found that adoption of the AI chatbot has widened across demographics, geographies, and income levels.
Among the key findings:
-
Closing gender gap. In January 2024, only 37% of ChatGPT users had typically feminine names. By July 2025, that figure rose to 52%, roughly reflecting the adult population.
-
Global growth. Usage in low-income countries grew four times faster than in high-income countries, signaling broader access and adoption.
-
Everyday use. Three in four chats were focused on writing, seeking information, or practical guidance. Only 30% of usage was work-related, while 70% involved non-work activities.
Researchers noted three main patterns of use: asking (49% of chats), doing (40% such as drafting, planning, or programming), and expressing (11% like reflection or play). Writing dominated professional tasks, while coding and self-expression remained niche.
The findings highlight how ChatGPT has become more than just a productivity booster. Instead, itโs increasingly seen as a decision-making partner and everyday companion โ a shift likened to how Google transformed daily habits in the mid-2000s.
โChatGPT is no longer a fad. Itโs becoming core to how people think, work, and live,โ the study said.
